Beautiful male Painted Bunting posed on a saw palmetto for me earlier this week in FL. It’s from the eastern of two populations in the US, that breeds in Georgia, South Carolina, and northern Florida, and was wintering in southern Florida. Unfortunately, this species is in decline, due to loss of habitat and, believe it or not, illegal poaching for the pet trade. A first for the state of Massachusetts! This Limpkin was sighted yesterday, WAY out of its normal range of Florida and Central and South America. I went out this morning and got to observe it - looking healthy and eating grubs and earthworms from residential lawns. How did it end up here? A juvenile Roseate Spoonbill showed up in Massachusetts yesterday after we had a 3-day nor’easter. It was only the second time ever that this species has been spotted in our state - perhaps he got blown off course, just a little. Looks pretty hungry!
