Came across this little Wood Duck duckling this morning while kayaking on the Ipswich River. He was all alone and searching for his family. Hopefully he found them; we did come across a couple other wood duck families downstream (with upwards of 10 ducklings), so let’s hope 🤞.

Happy Mother’s Day! A Mallard mom with a full baker’s dozen of ducklings that I came across this morning. #mallard #ducklings #mothersday
This is a view you don’t want to see if you’re a fish - down the hatch of a hungry Reddish Egret! From a recent trip to FL.

Carolina Wren hanging on during some snow flurries this morning. It was a cold 19 degrees F, but much better than the previous morning of 4 degrees.

Beautiful male Painted Bunting posed on a saw palmetto for me earlier this week in FL. It’s from the eastern of two populations in the US, that breeds in Georgia, South Carolina, and northern Florida, and was wintering in southern Florida. Unfortunately, this species is in decline, due to loss of habitat and, believe it or not, illegal poaching for the pet trade. For this reason I will not be sharing the specific location.

Black Vulture this evening, in with the largest flock of vultures I’ve ever seen. Most were turkey vultures, but probably 5-10% were black vultures.

A first for the state of Massachusetts! This Limpkin was sighted yesterday, WAY out of its normal range of Florida and Central and South America. I went out this morning and got to observe it - looking healthy and eating grubs and earthworms from residential lawns. How did it end up here? This species does not migrate, but occasionally a few will wander well outside of its range, perhaps as a way to seek out new territory.

Western Cattle Egret with some late fall foliage yesterday. These guys are generally not seen around here, but a few will occasionally show up during migration. They are usually found in much warmer climes hanging out with grazing cattle, where they feed on the insects that get disturbed by the herd.

A juvenile Roseate Spoonbill showed up in Massachusetts yesterday after we had a 3-day nor’easter. It was only the second time ever that this species has been spotted in our state - perhaps he got blown off course, just a little. Looks pretty hungry! Shot this video this morning in a tidal creek that’s part of a large saltmarsh on the coast.
